Imagine fields filled with solar panels surrounded by colourful flowers and lots of homes for birds and bats. That's what the Whinfield Solar Park in Darlington will look like when it's finished in December next year. The manager from the Sunnerg Group, the company building it, says, "We're all about using clean energy to help the Earth. Let's be honest, it's the future."
The issue of theft and vandalism is a concern at solar projects everywhere, and Whinfield is no exception. Powell explains, "We make every effort on-site to prevent such incidents. So far, we haven't had any intruders. Currently, we have one UFO Prime, but we're still in the early stages. Once we secure the necessary permissions, we plan to deploy two more UFOs on-site." Powell expresses his satisfaction with the communication with Kooi, saying, "I appreciate the friendly atmosphere, and there's always a friendly voice at the other end of the line to assist me with questions or issues."
“UFOs are perfect for our needs," Powell enthusiastically states, clearly passionate about his role in the world of solar energy. "This is actually my first job as a self-employed site manager," he adds, emphasising the significance of this venture. "It's intriguing work, and I also handle security on the site. My introduction to Kooi was through the two UFOs Medium we use at Stokeford Farm. My initial impression of the Kooi team was their pleasant and cooperative nature. Additionally, their system suits our requirements perfectly. I rely on the 247Kooi app daily to set the alarm when I enter and exit the site."
What makes the Whinfield project special in North East England isn't just that it will power 9,900 houses with 33MW of clean energy. It's also because of the way they're taking care of nature. The project covers a big area, 104 acres, spread across six fields. What's really amazing is how they're helping plants and animals. They're planting meadow flowers, putting borders around the fields, and making homes for birds. They're even building pathways for animals to cross safely. In a year, sheep will peacefully graze among the ground-mounted solar panels, allowing farming activities to continue harmoniously. There will be "Hedgehog highways," piles of wood to provide homes for reptiles and amphibians, and new trees and hedgerows to enrich the environment. Could Whinfield set a new standard for solar farms? Powell optimistically remarks, "I certainly hope so. We're doing everything within our means, and that brings me joy. As far as I'm concerned, I hope to maintain our collaboration with Kooi for a long time to come!"
